Steelburn Root
Description
The Steelburn Root, a plant native to swamps and marshes, thrives in consistently moist conditions. It features a small bush adorned with white leaves at the top and a large mass of roots that protrude above the ground. The roots bear lumps filled with acid, serving as the plant’s defense mechanism against predators. The plant is easily identifiable by the half-burned remains of birds and other small animals scattered around its roots.
Properties
When threatened, the Steelburn Root reacts by detonating one or more of its lumps, inflicting 2d6 acid damage to each creature within a 10-foot radius. Creatures can attempt a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw to take only half as much damage. Direct contact with a lump triggers the same effect.
Cultivation
Transplanting a Steelburn Root is nearly impossible due to its weight and the explosive nature of its roots when disturbed. However, reproduction is possible by collecting the flower that sprouts atop the bush annually. Although the flower wilts after a week, it can be severed, regrown in water, and then planted in the ground. The growth process spans 10 years before the plant produces its first acid lump. While it is possible to collect the acid, it is highly dangerous and not recommended.
Applications
The flower of a Steelburn Root can be brewed into a Potion of Acid Resistance, which grants resistance to acid damage for 1 hour upon consumption. The wood from the plant’s stem can be fashioned into a wooden shield that resists acid.
