Depth Monarch
Description
The Depth Monarch, a dark and thorny bush native to the Underdark, is characterized by its black leaves and rough bark. Standing up to 5 feet tall, these bushes often form clusters, creating natural barriers within the cavernous landscape of the Underdark.
Properties
The Depth Monarch possesses a unique property that influences the movement of creatures. When a creature is pricked by its thorns, they suffer 1d4 piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 10 Charisma saving throw or become disoriented due to the plant’s subtle psychic poison. On a failed save, the creature can’t take reactions until the start of its next turn and rolls a d8 to determine its actions during its turn. On a 1 to 4, the creature does nothing. On a 5 or 6, the creature takes no action but uses all its movement to move in a random direction. On a 7 or 8, the creature moves deeper into the bushes.
Cultivation
Cultivation of the Depth Monarch requires specific conditions found only in the Underdark. The plant thrives in cool, damp environments and requires regular watering with water from an underground source. The underbrush can be harvested by carefully cutting it at the base while wearing protective gear to avoid direct contact with the thorns. Once picked, the thorns lose their effect within seconds.
Applications
The leaves of the Depth Monarch have multiple uses when crushed. They can be mixed with lime zest and milk and left to boil for a day. After rinsing, the remaining mush can be consumed to gain advantage on Charisma saving throws. Additionally, if the leaves are crushed and mixed into a substance that would cause some effect such as exhaustion, dizziness, or other negative setbacks, the concoction will do the opposite of the original effect.
